THE CORNWALL JAIL

HISTORY OF LOCATION: In 1833, on the site of a former army barracks for the
War of 1812, the HISTORIC CORNWALL GAOL AND COURTHOUSE was built.
After a fire ravaged the barracks many soldiers and livestock were lost in the
fire. The Jail was opened in 1834 and the Courthouse in 1835. Both operated
until closed in November of 2002. Originally a maximum security prison, it
housed men, women, children, the insane, anyone that did not fit into what
society deemed as “normal” or useful for those times. Crimes ranged from
murder, arson and rape to petty theft, even treason. There were 5 confirmed
hangings at the jail.
CLAIMS OF PARANORMAL: Jail staff has reported hearing humming in the
hallways, footsteps, banging of cell doors. Heavy breathing, music playing. Cell
doors being closed at the end of their shift only found to be opened in the
morning when they arrive. Shadows have also been seen and some believe a
female and child spirits still reside in the jailhouse. Visitors have claimed to see
apparitions of two men that fade away, strange smells and cold chills.
